Vijaya Rahatkar, currently Chairperson, National Commission for Women & National secretary, Bhartiya Janata Party is Co-In charge of Rajasthan BJP and Former National President of BJP Mahila Morcha (Women Wing of BJP) and former Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women is one of the leading politicians in Bharatiya Janata Party. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Science with a major in Physics and a Postgraduate Degree in History, both from Pune University.
She is from Aurangabad District in State of Maharashtra. Back in the year 1995, as a young woman and novice politician, with no political background or mentor, Vijaya started as a BJP Booth Karyakarta and has an exemplary journey from being a local to now the national political leader. Through these decades, she has held key leadership posts in BJP as well as in electoral politics.
She was the elected member of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation from the year 2000 to 2010; and was also elected as the Mayor of Aurangabad from 2007 to 2010, from General and Open Category. She was also the Vice-President of National Mayors' Council and President of Maharashtra Mayors' Council during her tenure as Mayor. She has also been the National General Secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha for two terms from 2010 to 2014 before she became the National President of BJP Mahila Morcha in 2014.
She was Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women (Maharashtra Rajya Mahila Aayog). Vijaya Rahatkar had been visionary and extremely dedicated and driven towards the welfare of people, expanding BJP work on pan-India level and focussed on developmental policy making benefitting the common citizens. Her vigour and fortitude to serve society are reflected through the work and initiatives she had completed in all the past years, in various authoritative positions that she held and even as a Karyakarta of BJP.
As the National President of BJP Mahila Morcha, Vijaya had extensively toured all the states in India several times, for organisational strengthening of BJP Mahila Morcha and to create an effective bridge between the BJP Government at the Centre and the State Mahila Morcha and the Common citizens. She had executed various BJP campaigns and programmes across India, conducted trainings (prashikshan varg) and has given important recommendations in public policy making.
As the Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women Commission, Vijaya had done massive work for the welfare of women and for resolution of plethora of different women issues. To highlight a few, she had done immense work in rehabilitation of Acid Attack survivors. Sakshama is a platform and initiative launched to rehabilitate and help acid attack survivors. She had inspired confidence and is a ray hope to the survivors of acid attack. She had made efforts to avail various aids like medical treatment and cosmetic surgeries, providing employment, counselling, etc. are provided to these victims. Also, she held a ‘Confidence Walk’ with celebrities and in association with PNG Jewellers, had also promoted them as brand ambassadors of PNG Jewellers. Apart from this, she had done tremendous work in prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace and the enforcement of its law, across the tate, securing women working as a labour to students and women employed at the Universities, to the Multi-National Companies. She has also done lot of work in Women Trafficking and had held an ‘International Conference on Women Trafficking’, wherein delegates from across the world and India participated and discussed the resolution of the issue and rehabilitation of the victims. She had held rounds of policy discussions with experts and NGOs and has given several public policy recommendations to the Government from time to time.
She is farsighted and thorough with her research when she works in the public, and her simplicity and groundedness helps others to easily approach her with their issues.
